Most Colorful Festivals in Bangladesh

Bangladesh is a country of colorful festivals carried out with great passion and zeal throughout the year. Each season has its individual way of representing a particular essence of nature. Though there have been various changes in our countries social and economic structures, the nature of festivals never changes. Generation after generation, some colorful festivals are deeply rooted in our society which is mainly based on ancient rituals. The people of Bangladesh rejoice during these festivals; they wear gala dress in these gala days.

Bangladesh is a fertile land where several religious people live from different communities. It has a hundred years of glorious culture and heritage. People of our country are very industries and like to live in a joyful environment. We have lots of social and religious festivals all the year round. Different people from various communities take part in these festivals and get enjoyment in simultaneously. Festivals mean fiesta, shopping, and joy. The economic value of each festival is inevitable. It is remarkable that the producer has to produce verities category of product as demand and sells increase proportionally during festival time. Shopping malls are enlightened with lights and enriched with lucrative goods. Sales rake of superstores are contain many items to meet the demand of hungry customers. Each family of our country tries to procure new lucrative dresses for their families to celebrate these festivals. It helps to grow numerous fashion houses in Bangladesh.

During festivals, fashion houses are crowded by cheerful consumers. A million dollar transition is done to celebrate these festivals. Thus, fashion industries are contributing to our national economy by producing fashion items. Here, we will focus some of them for your reference.
POHELA FALGUN
FALGUNEvery year, the first day of spring is celebrated as Pohela Falgun. Pohela Falgun mainly celebrated for the passing out of winter season. Nature also becomes colorful when the spring arrives. Spring consists of two months of Falgun and Choitra. Pohela Falgun symbolizes the festive season of vibrant colors and refreshing flowers. On this occasion, girls get dressed in bashonti (yellow or orange) colored sarees with flowers in their hair while boys wear colorful Punjabis to welcome the arrival of Spring.
BIJU FESTIVAL
BIJUAll over Bangladesh, Biju is a tribal festival which demonstrates different folk culture, tradition and ritual which is also known as the Baisabi Festival. It is an alternative festival of Pohela Boishakh. Each tribe has their individual way of celebrating their New Year Festival on the first day of Baishakh. For 2-4 days, they refrain themselves from killing any living creatures and on the last day they cook a mixed curry with five types of vegetables, which they call “Pachan.”
POHELA BOISHAKHBOISHAKH

In Bangladesh, ‘Pohela’ means first and ‘Boishakh’ is the first Bengali month. Pohela Boishakh is the day on which Bengali New Year is welcomed with a new day of new beginnings, hopes, and happiness. Pohela Boishakh is the biggest celebration in Bengali community, and it is an alternative carnival against English New Year. The festival starts with the Rabindra song ‘Esho he Baisakh’ which is considered as the welcoming song of the new Bengali Year. There is a big colorful procession start from the Art Institute of Dhaka University. On this procession, girls get dressed in Boishakhi (white with red tag) colored sarees while boys wear colorful Punjabis to make this day cheerful.

BUDDHA PURNIMA

PURNIMAAcross Bangladesh, Buddha Purnima is the largest Buddhist festival celebrating the birth of Buddha as Siddartha Gautam in Bihar around 563B.C. Buddha devotees celebrate the festival based on three most important events in the life of Lord Buddha- his arrival, enlightenment and ‘nirvana.’ The daylong Purnima festivities include Pradip puja, recitations from the sacred verses of Tripitaka and breaking of fast by the monks.

NOUKA BAICH

BAICHNouka Baich is a traditional boat race ritual held in big river channels where neighboring villages participate against each other for the pride of their communities. Moreover, in every boat, there is a leader who doesn’t row, but he acts as an energizer for the whole team by singing songs and rhymes. Usually, Nouka Baich takes place in a full rainy season when river contains much water.
EID-UL-FITR

FITRThe joyous three-day celebration, Eid ul-Fitr falls on the first day of Shawwal, the month which follows Ramadan in the Islamic calendar. However, the celebrations begin upon the sighting of the new moon which marks the end of the month of fasting and prayer. Muslims all around the world observe a strict fast and participate in various pious activities such as charity and peace-making. As a second biggest Muslim country in the world, Eid-ul-Fitr celebrated lavishly in our society. Shopping malls and fashion houses are gathered by fascinated colorful dresses. Everyone procures most lucrative dresses by their effort for their favorite persons. Moreover, many of us distribute new clothes among poor people to celebrate this festival.
LALON MELA

LALONLalon song is called the song of a spiritual anthem. Every year, a five-day long fair is organized at Kushtia on the eve of Baul Fakir Lalon Shah’s birth anniversary otherwise known as ‘Tirodhn Dibosh.’ The akhara (a place where Lalon lived) is colorfully decorated where thousands of Lalon devotees gather from different locations of the country to celebrate his philosophical thoughts by performing his thousands of compositions.
EID UL-ADHA

ADHAEid ul-Adha also known as the Feast of sacrifice falls on the 10th day of the Islamic calendar’s last month, Dhu al-Hijjah. All over the world, Muslims who can afford a cow, goat or sheep sacrifice it as a reminder of Ibrahim’s obedience to Allah. They share the meat among their family, friends and the have-nots. It is essential to give a set amount of money to charity to help the poor to buy new clothes and food by selling the devoted animals skin.

DURGA PUJA

PUJADurga Puja is a famous Hindu Victory Celebration of the warrior Goddess Durga over the evil demon Mahishasura. It is celebrated during the last five days of Navaratri and Dussehra where huge statues of Goddess Durga is crafted and paraded all over the streets to place it on their homes in beautifully decorated podiums finally. At the end of the festival, accompanied by music and dancing these statues are then, immersed in river or sea water.
THE KITE FLYING FESTIVAL

KITEIn Bangladesh, each season has its individual way of representing nature here. All over the country, the Kite Flying Festival also known as the Shakrain Festival takes place to celebrate spring (Bashanta). The clear blue sky gets packed with high-flying kites in different colors and shapes.
CHRISTMAS

CHRISTMASChristmas is a Christian holiday in memory of Jesus Christ’s birth and most people celebrate it on the day of 25th December in the Gregorian calendar. Christmas celebration is not only about luxurious meals and decorated Christmas trees, but it is about bringing people from all around the world together; a joyous day when people from all cultures celebrate life.
BISHWA IJTEMA

IJTEMABishwa Ijtema is the second biggest Muslim gathering in the world after Hajj. The three days long event is held every year in Bangladesh near Turag River, where more than 40, 00,000 Muslims gather from all over the world. Due to a huge gathering, nowadays Ijtema are divided into two individual programs. Based on meditation and prayer, this day holds great significance to the Muslim community.
