Embroidery Digitizing is a combination of artistic arrangement and computerized process that transforms a design, photo, sketch or drawing according to someone’s requirement and converts it into an embroidery design to decorate fabric or other substance. If the design is resized or edited after digitizing, confirm the stitch count again, because thread consumption changes with the final file, not the rough artwork. That design is then programmed into the computerized machines to make DST file to prepare the desired outcome of something, an age-old process of needle and thread called embroidery. It is more than an art and preferred still today.embroidery thread consumption calculation

Why Accurate Embroidery Thread Calculation Matters

Usually, embroidery task consists of a bunch of needlework that delivers magnificent artwork. Every merchandiser has to know embroidery thread calculation process, and it’s not very complicated. Now I would like to show you how to make embroidery thread consumption. Modern embroidery device well equipped with several components and will provide you how many stitches are required for a particular design within a second. For bulk booking, calculate each color separately and add bobbin thread as a separate allowance, because this formula mainly gives the upper thread estimate. By this process, you can easily find out total embroidery thread requirement for an individual design. By using formula, we may know how many cones of thread are required to accomplish an individual styles embroidery task in bulk production. Counting process of embroidery thread mainly depends on some factors like stitch type, number of colors, number of stitches contain in design, thread type, meter per cons etc. A fruitful embroidery thread counting formula has given below for your reference.

Step-by-Step Embroidery Thread Consumption Calculation

Embroidery thread consumption calculation system in garment industry:

Example: Calculating for 4,500 Garments

Suppose,

Number of Garments Quantity is – 4,500 pieces

If stitch quantity in the following embroidery design is- 3890 (stitch)

Type of stitch – Satin

Length of thread in the cones – 3,500 meters If your cone length is different, replace 3,500 with the actual meter length printed on the thread label.

Stitch length in the embroidery design – 6 mm or 7 mm (It depends on stitch type and quality, but usually it will be 6mm or 7mm for better looking. So, we can use anyone without any hesitation, for satin type stitch we will use 7 mm & 6 mm for tatami). This is only an average thread factor, so dense satin, small lettering, underlay, and frequent trims may need a different allowance.

Now we can easily compute how many cones of thread are required to complete 4,500 pieces of garments with the following embroidery design.

Formula:

=Number of Garments quantity X Number of stitch X 7mm /1000 stitches /meter per cone

= 4,500 X 3,890 X 7/1,000/3,500

= 1, 75, 05,000 X 7/1,000/3,500 (here 1, 75, 05,000 is the total stitch quantity and 7mm is for 1000 stitches)

= 12, 25, 35,000/1,000/3,500 (here 12, 25, 35,000 is the total length of stitches, unit of it is millimeter and then dividing by 1,000 for making it meter, because 1000 mm = 1 meter)

= 122535/3,500

= 35.01 cones

For mixed-color logos, repeat the same calculation for each color block and then add them together before placing the order.

(Considering reject or loss quantity, please booked 2% more embroidery thread to keep safe in production as the stitching process of embroidery is totally operated by machine.) For more complex logos, a slightly higher buffer is safer than a shortage on the line.

So, we will procure 36 cones of thread to complete 4,500 pieces of garments.

Guess, now everything is clear to all. If anybody does not understand any point of the formula, please post a comment, and I will try to reply to meet your queries. In short, the stitch count, cone length, and wastage allowance are the three numbers that matter most in embroidery thread booking.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q1. How do you calculate embroidery thread consumption?

Ans: Use the stitch count from the digitized file, multiply it by the average thread length per stitch, then divide it by the meters in one cone. Add a small wastage allowance before bulk booking so the order is safe for production.

Q2. How much extra embroidery thread should I order for bulk production?

Ans: A small safety buffer is the right starting point for simple designs. For dense logos, frequent trims, or unstable fabric, book a little more after a sample sew-out.

Q3. Does embroidery thread calculation include bobbin thread?

Ans: Usually, no. The formula in the article mainly estimates the upper thread, so bobbin thread should be planned separately.

Q4. What affects embroidery thread usage the most?

Ans: Stitch type, stitch density, design size, thread thickness, underlay, and pull compensation are the biggest factors. Fabric type and the number of trims can also change the final consumption.

Q5. How many meters are in one embroidery thread cone?

Ans: There is no single standard cone length because it varies by brand and ticket size. Always check the cone label or supplier specification before calculating.
